“The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor ...”

Ring Finger - Read
Deuteronomy 17v18-20
“When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the LORD his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees. This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel.

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. James 1v22-25
But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
Questions for reflection or discussion
- What is the difference between someone listening and putting into practice?
- What does God do for the person who puts his word into practice?
Thoughts to consider
The whole point of the Bible is to grow to know God and to be changed by him. This is not an intellectual exercise, it is one of practical living out what we see. So, the illustration starts with wrist action.
Overview questions for reflection or discussion
- Why does the Lord make such a big deal about his word and what we do with it?
Thoughts to consider
There is a huge difference between those who know a bit of the Bible and those who know it well. The change happens through steadily and constantly working on it. The real trick is to work out what is sustainable before you begin. So, for reading, choose a daily amount to read and stick to it. The trick for memorising, is to memorise one verse a week, or one a month. This might seem a small amount, but one a week, will be 50 in a year. That makes a big difference.
