Introduction

Hell is the place God will send all who are condemned following His evaluation of our lives at the great white throne; all those who refuse God’s forgiveness in this life.

‘Do you think a Nazi war criminal could be forgiven by God and escape Hell; after sending people to the gas chambers?’  Yes! God will forgive anyone who asks forgiveness and receives Life, but people prefer to face Hell than let go of self-justifications, pleasures, pride, or,  or ...  ‘

Everlasting Destruction

Paul describes in what lies in store for all people at the end of the world.

Let’s look at what he writes in 2 Thessalonians. 1:7-9

  1. What is the outcome for those who have brought suffering on God’s children?
  2. What are the characteristics of those who will be punished by God?
  3. How will the punishment take place?

2 Thessalonians 1:7 And God will provide rest for you who are being persecuted and also for us when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven. He will come with his mighty angels,8 in flaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don't know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus.9 They will be punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his glorious power.

Hell Described

Jesus gave a description of Hell in a parable in Luke 16.

  1. How is heaven described?
  2. How is the place of punishment described?
  3. What warnings come through this parable?
  4. What could the rich man have done differently during his lifetime?

Luke 16 vs 19-31 19 Jesus said, "There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury.20 At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores.21 As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man's table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.

22 "Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to be with Abraham.* The rich man also died and was buried,23 and his soul went to the place of the dead.* There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.

24 "The rich man shouted, 'Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.'

25 "But Abraham said to him, 'Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish.26 And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there.'

27 "Then the rich man said, 'Please, Father Abraham, at least send him to my father's home.28 For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don't end up in this place of torment.'

29 "But Abraham said, 'Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read what they wrote.'

30 "The rich man replied, 'No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will repent of their sins and turn to God.'

31 "But Abraham said, 'If they won't listen to Moses and the prophets, they won't listen even if someone rises from the dead.'""

Hell in Revelation

Hell is described in Revelation 20.

  1. How is the place of punishment described?
  2. With whom is the place of punishment shared?
  3. What does it mean to have one’s name written in the book of life?

Revelation 20:10, 12, 14-15   10 Then the devil, who had deceived them, was thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.  ... 12 I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God's throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. ...  14 Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death.15 And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Warning People

Paul’s response was to ensure he had preached the gospel to all people.

  1. Why do you think Paul was so motivated?
  2. Where did Paul preach?
  3. What did Paul preach?

Acts 20:20-21 20 I never shrank back from telling you what you needed to hear, either publicly or in your homes.21 I have had one message for Jews and Greeks alike—the necessity of repenting from sin and turning to God, and of having faith in our Lord Jesus.
